I have come to believe how a church “feels” is more important to it’s family, than the mechanics of how it operates. In today’s lonely, disconnected society, “atmosphere” is everything. People join churches not because the New Arrivals system is perfect, but because the place FEELS right!

We all know we can be in conversation with someone, and this “friend” seems to tick every box – but they make you “feel” uncomfortable; perhaps something you can’t quite put your finger on. But because of it, you won’t glue yourself to that person. The same is true of church. Seekers become members intuitively, not because of logical reasoning.

I have found four key atmosphere’s pervade true and successful churches – there may be more; but these are my observations so far:

1) ENERGY - All great churches have energy. This is supplied by vision & visionaries. The Great Commission is the Vision above all visions, and in varying ways we express it to release focus and goal setting to draw people to a common cause. There are no passengers (Unless you’re healing for a while). Everyone wants in on the team and are getting sore elbows fighting for a chance to out-serve each other!

The energy of Vision makes mole-hills out of mountains, makes a warrior out of a worrier, a team-member out of the shy-bound soul. We breath deeper when we inhale vision; and all our muscles function better.

2) WARMTH – The second atmosphere of a great church is warmth. The wide embrace of a loving culture. This only comes from a full and unflinching knowledge of God’s Grace.

The Pharisees were offended at Jesus in Luke 15 for the simple reason that he welcomed sinners. Just to nail home his example to them, He then spends the rest of the chapter saying “Too right I do! If you’re a Lost Sheep I’m going to hunt you down and carry you; if you’re a Lost Coin I’ll put everything on pause to find you; if you’re a Lost Son I’m going to run full pelt at you, throw my arms around you and hug the sin right out of you.” God’s kindness will take you places, and make us people, that brow beating never could. (Romans 2:4).

While never celebrating sin, every great church has a warm embrace of grace for every faltering sinner, reserving it’s harshest authoritarianism for dealing with the self-righteous, self appointed, “Sin-Police” (That’s how Jesus did it!). Like Paul in Galatians, we should be so enamoured with God’s free gift of grace we invite controversy and sharp intakes of breath from those who still secretly mutter as though our great salvation was a moral-improvement program, and not a love affair in the making. Grace is an enabling from God to overcome our failings by an act of restorative and empowering mercy, dangerously & repeatedly supplied in life-changing quantities.

3) HONOUR - Great churches are awash with honour; and you can feel it. The chief source of this comes not from hen-pecked followers, but from leaders who know how to be fathers.

The father hearted leader deals not in envy, competition or law making; but in grace, opportunity and making his piece of God’s garden a field of dreams for his flock. Honour should be seasoned with good humour and never based on insecure flattery but rather a spirit of co-operation.

“Honour your Fathers and Mothers – and you’ll live LONG in the land of Promise!” is a mindset that creates an atmosphere; and that atmosphere is what “family” is supposed to feel like. Every soul finds that attractive.

4) PRESENCE - Finally, I have found great churches are electrified with a supernatural sense of the divine presence. God IS Atmosphere with a Capital “A”!

The source of such an atmosphere is not simply song singing, but the intimacy with the Holy Spirit that can be found in worship, and then outworked in our lifestyles, methodology of church gatherings and governance, as we seek to grieve-not the One for whom Church exists. (Eph 2:22)

From Genesis to Revelation God desires to walk & dwell with man in some form of “heaven on earth” Kingdom, and the evidence of the arrival of that Kingdom has always been the overthrow of the restraints of lower human experience in favour of heavens culture. Miracles, signs, wonders, healings and the Spirits communication of prophecy & wisdom flow naturally where heaven is touching earth. (Matthew 6:10.) The lack of such a glory has always been considered a thing of “curse” or punishment.

The evidence of true Kingdom arrival in a church is power, not simply talk (1 Cor 4:20). “Is he the One?” John the Baptist asked in Luke 7:18+. Jesus replied “Tell him the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised”. The “signs” of His authenticity were miracles; the signs of an apostle are miracles (2 Cor 12:12) and the signs of every fresh move of God in Church history has been the overthrow of human laws by heavens arrival! We are not supposed to simply talk heaven, but DO heaven!

In Acts 4:30 the Early Church’s response to persecution was not to make themselves more culturally relevant or re-analyse their styling (though all that is GOOD!); but rather to passionately cry out to God, “Stretch forth your hand to perform signs and wonders” in expectation of a fresh wave of “Power from on high”. They did not call for a better worship leader to perform; but rather for God to take centre stage and perform the divine dance of the Creator rejoicing in the midst of the created!

—-The Energy of Vision. The Warmth of Grace. The Honour of Fathers & Sons. The Presence of God: Combined, these streams of atmosphere create a river where members and seekers alike are both fearful, in awe, yet deeply attracted to know a heavenly Father through the setting of His earthy Family. They become a part of the body.

Finally, read this and dream about it being your church atmosphere…

“The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No-one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.” (Acts 5:12-16 NIVUK)

A few thoughts on church growth in a Western setting….

One of the ways we show a love for God and for the people He loves, is to have a passionate, organised, Spirit inspired attitude to reaching lost souls for Christ and growing them into disciples – which means growing our churches. I have noticed 5 main aspects where ever church is growing:

1. COMMITMENT TO THE COMMISSION
Jesus left a divine command ringing in His disciples ears…Go, Go, Go! Preach, publish, broadcast the good news to all creation and make disciples of them, baptising, healing with signs & wonders. Though every church mission statement can be slightly different, at the end of the day every department of every church and every person in every pew, must be challenged, inspired, taught and shown how to live a life that fulfils this command. It must pump like blood through the veins of your church, so you have a congregation that is a pioneering revolution taking place, not a hospital ward (Though every church needs a hospital ward!)

2. A BRINGING CULTURE
This will result in people bringing people to church. “Bringing” is found all over the Gospels, as people brought others to Jesus. From the leaders perspective, there must be loads of events, big or small/attractional or relational, to bring people to!

3. ENERGY
When a place is alive with vision, energy and momentum, it can’t help but be attractive. Places that are energetically positive, excited, bounding from week to week, excited about what God is doing among them – these places grow.

Now you might think “I wish our church had that!”. Truth is, you build it. Leaders create this environment on purpose. They get vision from God, throw the vision at people, and throw people into the vision. Get people working, focussed on the Great Commision, working in their skill set areas, celebrating successes and laughing about failures – and you will develop a place with energy.

4. FLOOR SPACE
Real practical in the West – floor space affects your growth!

Someone asked me the other day “Why isn’t my church growing?”. I said “How many come along?” “About 75″ was the reply. “And how big is your hall?”. “It’ll take about 100″.

“You’re pot bound” I replied. “It won’t grow any more. If you are 70-80% full, apart from special events, it is unlikely you grow beyond your floor space. You need more meetings or a new hall to grow”

I studied and discovered this when I first took on our church. If you have the previous three points in a church, then this fourth one is the bottleneck that will stop growth. You have to keep adding floor space and service times in order to grow.

Apart from the first three points being evident in our church, the main practical decision that has grown our church has been the continued addition of multiple services, multiple venues, extension services and church plants. It is well proven that every growing church has “multiple” services of some sort, whether in the same venue or in satellite congregations.

Nothing has released the pioneering vision for our 90 year old church, like pioneering new meetings and churches in different places.

Be brave. Pick a village or town nearby with no church like yours – and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and go plant an extension service by just booking a hall, and putting on worship, speakers and hospitality. Tell everyone you’re coming (One year we put 120,000 fliers through doors and rented 10 billboards!) … and pray for people to come!

Get yourself some more floor space, and you’ll grow.

(PS.. Usually a Sunday night service in addition to your Sunday morning, is not a “multiple service” in the best sense for church growth, as it is often the really committed ones from the morning, plus a few others. To really push for growth, put two services on a Sunday morning, either one after the other, or in two venues. That will create proper space for growth).

5. A CYCLE OF LIFE
Once you’ve got people coming to your service create the net to catch them. This requires something like:

a) Good clear altar calls.
b) Good follow up and conversation, retaining names and addresses. Giving people bibles, CD’s, teaching aids.
c) New Arrivals Course, for new comers to your church
d) New Believers Course, giving people the basics of the Christian faith.
e) Connection through small groups and team membership. We try to get people working ASAP!
f) Pastoral Care: As a church grows, not everyone can connect to the leader or leader couple. Every person must have their own pastor if you’re going to get beyond 120 in size as a church.

Have fun on the adventure of church growth. It’s all about souls that Jesus loves deeply!

British Prime Minister David Cameron’s “Christian Fight Back” speech, made at Downing Street to Christian ministries from across the denominations 3 April 2012.

In it he praises what he calls “The Christian Fight Back….”. Remarkable! Here is the full script:

“As you know, we have receptions here for Diwali, for Eid, for Jewish New Year, and I think it is right and it is proper in a Christian country to celebrate this – the most important of the Christian festivals, Easter – right here in Downing Street. So I’m very proud to have brought together such a prominent group of Christians in so many different walks of life, so many different charities, so many different churches. I think it’s a great event that we have it and I’m proud to hold it again. And it is, as I said, we obviously spend a lot of time celebrating Christmas and thinking about Christmas, but actually, really, Easter in many ways is the one that counts. Even those of us who sometimes struggle with some parts of the message – the idea of resurrection, of a living God, of someone who’s still with us – is fantastically important even if you sometimes, as I do, struggle over some of the details. It’s a very important message. It’s a message of hope.

What I wanted to say to you today, really, I think I’ve got three points, one plea and two challenges, if that’s all right. The three points are these: the first thing is: I think there is something of a Christian fight-back going on in Britain and I think that’s a thoroughly good thing. I think you could see it in the enormous reception of the Pope’s visit; I think you could see it with the successful return visit that Sayeeda Warsi led. I think you can see it, actually, in the reception to Sayeeda’s superb speeches about standing up for faith and celebrating faith and, as she so famously put it, actually doing God in Britain. So I think you can see it in those things. I think you could also see it in the very happy celebration of the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. I think that was another event that helped in this Christian fight-back, and I think there have been one or two good examples of the Christian fight-back as a thoroughly good thing: the fact that we’ve had that argument and won that argument over Biddeford Council and the fact that if councils want to say prayers before council meetings they should. We do in the House of Commons, why on earth shouldn’t local councils do that as well? I think we see the fight-back in this very strong stance that I’ve taken and others have taken in terms of the right to wear a crucifix. I think this is important. People should be able to express their faith, and so I think there’s something of a fight-back going on and I think we should welcome that.

The second point I want to make is: I hope that the fight-back will be based around values more than anything else. I think that we have lots of things going for us as a country, all sorts of difficulties and challenges, but the greatest need we have in our country is to have strong values and to teach our children and to bring people up with strong values. The values of the Bible, the values of Christianity are the values that we need – values of compassion, of respect, of responsibility, of tolerance. Now, I’ve made this argument many times that you don’t have to be a Christian or you don’t have to adhere to another religion to have strong values, to believe in strong values or to pass those values on to your children, but the point I always make is that it helps. We’re always trying to tell our children not to be selfish, but is there a better way of putting it than ‘love they neighbour’? We’re always telling our children to be tolerant – I know I am, and often a fat lot of good it does me – but is there a better way of explaining tolerance than saying, ‘do to others as you would be done by’? It’s the simplest encapsulation of an absolutely vital value and the Christian church and the teaching of the Bible has put it so clearly. We’re always telling our children that they must make the most of what they have; they must not waste what they have been given, and is there a better way of putting that than ‘don’t hide your light under a bushel, make the most of your talents’? So I think that Christian teaching can help us to have the strong values that we need as a country and we should be celebrating that and shouting about that.

The third point I want to make, and I think this is part of the Christian fight-back, is we should be very proud of the institutions that the churches in Britain support. I think, particularly in an age where we’re really making some progress on improving levels of attainment in school, we should celebrate the link there is between churches and schools, and indeed between mosques and schools and synagogues and schools. Faith has a huge amount to bring not just to our national life in terms of values; it has a huge amount to bring in terms of strengthening our institutions and I think it’s a good time to celebrate that.

Now my plea: my plea is that I hope that in spite of the disagreements and the arguments we will undoubtedly have, the plea is that I hope we don’t all fall out too much over the issue of gay marriage. Let me just make this point. What the government is consulting over is a change to civil marriage, to what happens at the registry office. It’s not consulting over what happens in the church. I’ll just make this point, which is that inevitably there’s a consultation, inevitably there will at some stage be a vote and inevitably there’ll be some quite strong arguments between now and then, and there’ll be some strong words used. But I hope we can keep the strength of the language at a reasonable level and that goes for both the proponents of gay marriage and indeed the opponents of gay marriage.

The point I’d make is this: if this does go ahead it will change what happens in a registry office; it will not change what happens in a church. If this doesn’t go ahead, to those of us who’d like it to go ahead, there will still be civil partnerships, so gay people will be able to form a partnership that gives them many of the advantages of marriage. So I hope we can just keep the debate at a rational and sensible level, but on the basis that we’re not always going to agree. That was my plea.

Now let me go to my two challenges. The two challenges are these. The first one is overseas and the second one is at home. The one overseas is this: I think there’s huge potential for what I call and what others call the Arab Spring and the growth of democracy in the Middle East, but there’s also an enormous danger in terms of the persecution of minorities and particularly the persecution of Christians. Now, Britain is fully engaged in the world; we have the second largest aid budget of any country in the world. We’re one of the few countries keeping our promise to spend 0.7% of GDP on aid, and we do have real influence, real heft in these countries. I think there’s a really important moment, and this is the challenge, is for the churches and Christians to work together with government on agendas to persuade these newly democratising countries not to persecute minorities and to respect Christians the world over and the right to practise your religion.

The domestic challenge is, and you’d be surprised if I didn’t bring it up, the issue of the Big Society. I think there is enormous potential in churches and faith-based organisations to tackle some of the deepest problems we have in our society, whether it is educational and under-attainment, whether it is homelessness, whether it is mental health. Just wandering around the room chatting to some of you, I was talking to a lady who runs very important residential clinics for young people who have been self-harming or indeed have eating disorders – a classic example of someone of faith who has a great belief in wanting to do good, in wanting to change the world and we should be encourage those faith-based organisations into the solving of social problems.

Tomorrow I am going to be going to the City of London, not to make a speech about the importance of the City raising finance for business, but on the importance of the City raising finance for society. Big Society capital in effect with the Big Society Bank is going to make money available so that organisations, that social entrepreneurs in this room can take that money and expand their social enterprise to cover different parts of the country or to make it bigger to solve bigger problems, to take on bigger challenges. This is an agenda that I think is vital for the future of our country; it’s one that I’m passionate about, but I think it gives the biggest possible opportunity for churches up and down the country to have a real social mission as well as having a moral, religious and a spiritual mission. I think it’s a great opportunity for faith to show its power to move mankind, to move mountains, to get things done.”

The launch of the Revival Fires tour saw New Beginnings Church in Goole packed to standing room only, and rocking! 2 more deaf ears opened instantly, pain left about 12-15 people’s bodies. It was so touching to see people break out in smiles or tears as years of pain disappeared!

That now means 15 different people’s deaf ears have opened in 3 weeks! I have been in settings across even Africa & South America and know that any church at any time would consider that remarkable! Praise GOD!

Cancer Healed!
We’ve also just received the following email regarding last September’s conference:

“I was diagnosed in February 2011 with breast cancer. I live in London but I attended the Nathan Morris event in September 2011. On the first night God allowed him to call out for person’s with blood conditions. I went up as my blood had been affected when I had done chemotherapy. Nathan prayed and laid hands on me and I (fell to the floor) in the spirit.

While on the floor, the Lord revealed that there was someone there with cancer in the right breast. I put my hand up ….. There was no physical manifestation then but when I visited the doctor for my appointment the following Monday she surprisingly said she was going to schedule me for new tests. Thanks be to God, the results came a few weeks later that the cancer had gone. I know my testimony will glorify the Lord and encourage others that God heals every form of disease.”

JESUS is so GREAT!

Disabled Badges & Mobility Cars returned!
People are now facing the real life necessities of giving back disabled badges and mobility allowance cars. Please pray for all those seeking employment, provision and prosperity now they have been healed!

And it keeps flowing even after the special weekend at City Hall:

One of our guys, Chris Shore wrote on Facebook: “So on Thursday I saw a paralysed woman get out of her wheelchair and start dancing. On Friday I saw a woman on crutches walk hand-in-hand with her husband for the first time in years. On Saturday I saw a man with MS waving his sticks in the air. Sunday was fairly quiet, although I did bump into a guy who got his leg healed outside the Travelodge. Oh and the church was pretty full too. I had to sit on the floor. Africa? No. Welcome to the UK “

We are hearing of major conditions like MS & Cerebral Palsy being healed, as well as pain leaving loads of knees, backs, joints; from Scarborough to Cambridge, Tiverton, the Midlands. Something is breaking out!

On Thursday I was ministering at Steve Uppals church in Wolverhampton. Part way through my message God interupted and in 20 minutes we saw pain leave about 20 people – A man left without his crutches and another was healed of deafness in a matter of seconds!

Last night at New Life Hull people’s sight was healed, deafness left, pain healed. This one from Fiona Gray: “Last night I had healing prayer for my feet….I have lived my live so far with varying amount of pain all my life (I was born with talipese, more commonly know as club foot) And although I have still lived a fairly ‘normal’ life it has as times caused me limitations, but every day I had pain, some days worse than othe days, but always there. Last night I went up for prayer… the pain went! Seriously! I could not stop walking about… I do not ever remember walking without some level of pain. Incredible! This morning I got out of bed carefully, usually I can only walk on my tiptoes when I first get outof bed, but not this morning, feet flat to the floor and no pain!! I have to say that my feet feel very strange, but stil NO PAIN.”

We have now seen 13 different people’s deafness healed in 10 days! Some have said the ticking of their clocks is now too loud! How’s that for healing?!

God is on the move!!

Sunday evening Tour dates in Goole, Driffield, Bridlington, Beverley, Cottingham, Hessle and Hull to be released in the next 24 hours! Come and join us to be healed, inspired, saved and touched by the POWER of God!

I always love the aftermath even more than the event. Here’s what happened last Sunday in one of our local anglican churches….

12/3/12 – Sunday morning at St Aidans like never before…..
It seemed like a normal Sunday morning however, it soon became apparent that it wasn’t. Stories from the last few days were shared including someone giving testimony of being pain free in her hips and the swelling in her ankles going down after being prayed for on our church day away on the Saturday.

During the worship there was something different, Gods presence felt really strong I looked across the church and saw people in tears and just lost in worship like never before and a real sense of freedom in the place.

A lady was being prayed for during the worship, this is a rare occurrence on a Sunday morning for us (normally prayer ministry is at the end of the service). Mick (our vicar) then stood up to carry on with the service but was speechless, the lady then reading the days bible passage was overwhelmed and struggled to read. People were breaking the mould and sharing, there and then, how God was touching them.

The lady who was prayed for during the worship then continued to be prayed for during the talk (again this never normally happens.) Later on in the service this lady then gave testimony of how she had been more powerfully touched by God than ever before. She had been prayed for her MS before but this time was different, an amazing heat overwhelmed her body and during that time she ended up lying face down on the floor with her arms above her head, a position that is normally impossible for her to be in without immense pain. People were completely amazed, then followed an open invitation for prayer and people didn’t need convincing they started freely moving more than I have seen respond before, it was like no one was holding back. One of our young people was on the team praying for people which was incredible.

During this time a lad with Muscular Distrophy got out of his wheel chair and was able to walk flat footed, straight backed and head up which he cannot usually do, everyone around was astounded.

I had prayer for a hearing problem in my right ear and I can now hear more clearly and it doesn’t feel blocked anymore. The service started at 10am and finished at 12.45pm!!! Not normal!!! Since yesterday I have heard stories from the youth group last night, the lad with muscular dystrophy walked from the car into church pushing his wheelchair, he is not yet completely cured but we are going to keep praying, our young people also spent time in God’s presence and prayed for each other. The lady who had MS had a full night’s sleep for the first time in a long time, is walking without her walking stick and has not taken any pain killers in 24 hours!!! The lady with previous hip problems is still pain free!! Stories are still pouring in, people cannot stop talking about it and I’ve been told the atmosphere at Church today was like never before! God has completely turned his people upside down and is definitely on the move!!! We don’t want this to stop and are hungry for more of him, Come on God!!!
